“In the whirlwind of summit planning, timing your application just right can make all the difference. Early birds get noticed, but unique, thoughtful proposals leave a lasting impression. This week, we’re unpacking how to be a stand-out speaker and why first impressions really do count.”
Wow, what a whirlwind of a week it has been! I literally just wrapped up my Membership What’s Working Now Summit less than an hour ago. I took a much-needed shower, grabbed a bite to eat, and here I am, diving straight into recording this episode. Talk about real behind-the-scenes action, right?
So, what did I learn from hosting this summit? Not just from the host’s perspective, but also from the vantage point of a future summit speaker. I’ve jotted down some notes and can’t wait to share them with you.
First on my list: Apply early! When people ask for speaker applications, I’ve noticed that there’s always a rush at the last minute—much like RSVPs for a wedding. Trust me, this is one habit I’m going to break. Being one of the early submissions keeps you top of mind for the host, and that can make all the difference.
Next, make your application stand out. Some of the speakers I chose for my summit had such unique topics that picking them was a no-brainer. But then I had a few who had very similar topics, making the decision extremely tough. So, what makes you unique? Is it your topic, your audience, or perhaps your promotional reach? Spell it out in your application.
Now, this might sound a bit “keener” (that’s Canadian for someone who’s very eager), but asking how you can help the host can go a long way. I had speakers who offered their support in multiple ways, and it was invaluable. So offering your help, time permitting, can really make you shine.
And oh, be the first to dive into everything! Join the Facebook group immediately, download podcasts, and show genuine enthusiasm. It’s not about being a teacher’s pet; it’s about showing your support, which gives the host a confidence boost and builds a better summit experience for everyone. Thank you, Annie Boone, for setting the bar so high in my summit. Your engagement and support were phenomenal!
Last but certainly not least, consider sponsoring a summit if it’s a good fit for you. Sponsors from my summit got extra visibility because I wanted them to get their money and effort’s worth. It’s a win-win if done right.
Drawing from all this, I’m excited—no, thrilled—to be speaking at another summit in January. I’ve already got some paperwork waiting on my desk for Monday. I’m going all in to be a keen summit speaker.
